A media professional's view of AI

May 31, 2023 - Gerard Kunkel, Managing Partner, NMP

I started out as an art director. I had a successful career in magazine design and was honored to win dozens of design awards. The creative process was quite laborious back in those days - but the iterative process of getting what you saw in your mind's eye took time. In some cases, the business you worked for didn't give you the time. So, you compromised. Hopefully not too much. I switched careers into software development, then television, then started a media and technology advisory. The quality of the presentation and visual storytelling has always been important in my work, and important in everything we produce at Next Media Partners, LLC.

“As a creator, I'm embracing these tools to give me more power to explore, iterate and fully express what I see in my mind.”

A few minutes ago, I played with Adobe's generative AI in Photoshop. In the image shared here I created a graphic illustration using MidJourney a few weeks ago that was one of dozens of explorations. I saved a few with stark white backgrounds. Using Photoshop, I wanted to add a complementary background. Photoshop's AI implementation made that background creation a snap - but also afforded me the opportunity to explore ideas as fast as I could think up the words to describe what I was looking for. AI will certainly have its impact on the future of work. As a creator, I'm embracing these tools to give me more power to explore, iterate and fully express what I see in my mind.

The final image which combined AI generated art from Midjourney with AI generated background from Adobe Photoshop. Rendered as layers, there is still a great deal of art direction that can be applied to this image.
