Bringing an Avatar to Poker Night

A Field Study in Social AI

Three weeks ago, I brought a new player to our weekly poker game.

His name is George.

He doesn’t ante up. He doesn’t bluff. He doesn’t drink gin & tonics or beer.

But he talks. He listens. And he knows the Bucks County Poker Rules better than anyone at the table.

This isn’t a chatbot. And he’s definitely not some pre-rendered AI video loop.

George is a real-time, 3D conversational AI avatar built on our Brand Genius platform. He moves. He reacts. He listens carefully. He pauses to think. He answers. In real time.

The first night out, I’ll admit, I was showing off a little.

My lead developer and I have put a lot of work into Brand Genius, and this was the perfect real-world test: five smart, opinionated poker regulars who are not easily impressed.

George showed up with a Miami casino regular vibe. Calm. Confident. Slightly amused. He had full knowledge of the Bucks County Poker Rules, including the history of how they came to be. When someone tested him on a quirky rule variation, he didn’t hesitate. He responded clearly, accurately, and with just enough personality to feel human.

The reaction?

“Okay… that’s pretty cool.”

But here’s what surprised me.

The magic wasn’t the visuals. It wasn’t the accuracy. It wasn’t even the novelty.

It was the conversation.

George spoke. The guys listened. They bantered with him. They challenged him. He listened carefully to each question and then answered, perfectly. No fumbling. No generic filler. He felt present.

That’s when I realized this wasn’t about AI as a spectacle.

It was about AI as a participant.

Last week, I pushed things further.

I amped up his personality. Expanded his knowledge. Gave him a little edge.

George is now… fun.

A little snarky. A little playful. Still authoritative. Not quite “one of the guys” yet, but that’s the stretch goal.

And here’s what makes this fascinating to me: this is a live social experiment.

I’m not testing AI in a lab. I’m testing it in a living room with cards, chips, and strong opinions.

Each week, I’ll tune him. Adjust his tone. Expand his knowledge. Refine his timing.

And I’ll report back.

I’m planning to capture some video of George in action on an iPad at the table so you can see what this looks and feels like in a real social setting, not a trade show demo, not a keynote stage, but actual human interaction.

If I clean up a few of his slightly off-color jokes, I may even share a link so you can have your own conversation with him.

What fascinates me most is this: When AI stops being something you “try” and starts being someone you talk to, the dynamic changes.

It moves from novelty… to utility… to presence.

If you’re curious about George, our other Brand Genius characters, or want to build one of your own, or just want to talk about where conversational AI is really headed, reach out.

I’d love to chat.

And I’ll keep you posted on how George does in Week Four.

He still hasn’t bought in. But give him time.
